The River Walk of San Antonio is a marvel of government foresight, commercial cooperation, targeted tourism, and making a positive out of a negative. They took a “build it and they will come” gamble, and it paid off.

The River Walk follows a well planned and developed set of walking trails that hug both sides of the San Antonio River and its side canals. Originally formed to handle nature’s forces that sometimes resulted in devastating floods, it is now a serene and almost park-like experience right in the middle of downtown San Antonio. The walk blends trees with restaurants and nightlife hot spots, making it a “happening” place for all ages, interests, and urban pastimes.

The character and feel of the River Walk changes between day and night, too. Day is oriented to shops, offshoot mini parks, and grabbing an ice cream cone. Night is oriented to seeing and being seen, loud congregations of happy people, and events. Between each are river boat tours and miles of exploring its many nooks and crannies.
