Lopez Island: Iceberg Point, MacKaye Harbor
Kayaking and Bicycling Lopez Island, San Juan Islands (August 2008)
We took the ferry from Anacortes across to peaceful, rural Lopez Island for an extended weekend. MacKaye Harbor Inn bed and breakfast provided a relaxing place to base camp, with views over MacKaye Harbor, delicious breakfasts, and entertaining, friendly hosts.
Lopez Island was well know for its gentle topography and low amount of car traffic, so it has been a favorite for bicyclists. We explored lots of back roads, leading us to scenic vistas across the water, active farms, wooded dirt roads, a farmers' market, and interesting historic structures. To get around the perimeter of the island, we also explored several bays of the south end, staying to the west and east sides of the south end but not getting out into the open bigger waves of the most southerly end. There was pretty scenery everywhere throughout this nice, relaxed community.
